N.b: this is a list of “homepages”, I also mantain a separate list of links involving point sources (books, articles, etc).

Web Services

• Capacities

  Another Notes taking/Todo List/Calendar/Long form writing/Mind Map service. But it has a native Linux app.

• Pocket

  Good cross-platform bookmark manager. RIP

  (I’m using Instapaper now, but the search feature is behind paywall…)

• Typst

  An alternative to Latex/Overleaf

• BtDigg

  A “decentralized” torrent search engine

Windows

• RightKeyboard

  Useful when you have a laptop and an external keyboard with a different language, it detects you using a different keyboard and automatically switches language.

• PowerToys

  Multi-utility by Microsoft, extends Windows with some useful quality of life improvements.

• PDFsam Basic

  I prefer to have the slides and other course material in one big PDF file to scroll through. This software has been the best so far.

• SumatraPDF

  PDF reader which remembers the last opened files. Best content/window size ratio so far.

• VS Code

  It works with basically everything thanks to the extensions, fast start-up.

• Foobar2000

  Music player with a lot of supported codecs.

• Shotcut

  Video editor, free, open source. Tons of encoders/decoders support thanks to the ffmpeg backend. If you only need to crop, cut or zoom this is my goto editor.

• WizTree

  WinDirStat’s faster cousin, albeit freeware. Good to see what’s taking up space on your disk.

• CompactGUI

  Transparent compression of Windows folders, useful for big software programs

Android

• Notewise

  Note taking app

• ReadEra

  Reader for all types of documents, it just works and it’s fast.

• Total Commander

  File Manager plain and simple. No ADS and useful extensions for SMB.

• Nova Video Player

  Good series/movie catalog manager for both local and network storage. I use it together with the next recomendation.

• mpvKt

  Video player, personally I found it more stable than VLC and with a better UI than mpv-android.

• AIMP

  So far the only music player that doesn’t randomly crash or run out of memory. Also foobar2000 passes that bar but at least for AIMP the UI is usable.

• Seal

  yt-dlp for Android

• RoboShadow

  nmap for Android. The best Fing alternative after they started filling it with ads and payments.

Linux

• Glance

  Self-hosted dashboard. You can customize it with all type of information and what-not. I run it on my RPi Zero 2W behind an mTLS firewall and it barely occupies any memory.

• elinks

  A minimal TUI based browser, ideal to host on your server and access it via ssh when your connection is monitored. Slightly more feature rich than Lynx (mouse navigation, multible tabs, etc…) but lacks the advanced layout support of Chawan (If you know a way to cross-compile it for arm-linux-gnueabihf please let me know).

  Tip: Use img2sixel for pictures.

• Celluloid

  An mpv based player, with good Gnome integration

• KDEConnect/GSconnect

  Excellent for synchronizing phone <-> Linux or phone <-> phone
